Were there any efforts to preserve art and historical architecture during The Great War?

Asked 6 months ago by Anonymous

I have recently been reading "The Monuments Men: Allied Heroes, Nazi Thieves and the Greatest Treasure Hunt in History" by Robert M. Edsel and Bret Witter about efforts by the Allies during World War II to save precious artwork and historical architecture, specifically in the European Theater, from the destruction of the battlefield and Nazi theft. With World War I being fought over much the same territory - as well as other areas like Palestine with a rich cultural history - where there any similar efforts to preserve significant art?
