Recycling metal from spent artillery shells

Asked 1 week ago by Andrew Gianelli

Every time there is an offensive in the Great War we hear about the millions of shells fired. What was done with all the spent shells? Given the huge material shortages, presumably there was some sort of way nations had of trying to recycle the metal, but was this process standardized by some central command, or left to local units? Thanks, and keep up the great work!
